Why did we chose to go to Canada and New York? I began studying French in middle school, kept up with it in high school, and it became one of my majors in college. In fact, I spent my senior year living in Aix-en-Provence, France. I rarely speak French now, but I miss it. And Larry has never been to Europe. Montreal seemed like the closest thing to France without having to cross an ocean. And we figured, why not make a road trip out of it, and stop at some interesting places in New York on the way there and back?

Admittedly, this trip is also inspired by an episode of Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, which airs on the Travel Channel on Monday nights at 10 p.m. It’s a fascinating show about Anthony Bourdain, a renowned chef, and his travels around the world seeking out local cuisines and specialty foods. Anthony visited Montreal, Canada, on a recent episode, and he ate at a restaurant called Au pied de cochon. After watching him gorge himself on plates after plate of delicious-looking food, Larry and I decided that we wanted to go to that restaurant. And p.s., and almost every dish contains foie gras, a delicious and rather scandalous food. In spite of all its controversy, we love foie gras.

One of Larry’s favorite beer makers, the Unibroue brewery, is located right outside Montreal. We’re going to try to take a tour of la brasserie, but right now it is not promising. Unless we can find ten more people to join us. If we can’t get a tour, we will certainly be spending an evening at their restaurant Fourquet Fourchette, drinking Belgian style ale and eating–what else?–more foie gras.
