Saturday was wet.
We drove from Aberdeen, Maryland to Gardiner, New York, and we had the windshield wipers on for the entire trip. We rolled into Gardiner around 2:15, and headed straight for the Red Rooster Cafe. No Rhett Miller sightings yet. Lunch was delicious, and we had sides of creamy purple beets with our sandwiches. Larry loves beets; I think they taste like dirt. Purple dirt.

We checked into the Cedar Hill Bed and Breakfast, and it was absolutely wonderful. Jennifer and John, the hosts, were so accommodating and friendly. They’ve got chickens, dogs, and $80,000 horses from Peru that walk like prisses.
The Shiraz room we stayed in was gorgeous:

We went next door to the Whitecliff Vineyard and tasted 11 of the wines. It was super hot there, but the wine was tasty and we bought two bottles. No Rhett sightings yet.
We then headed to New Paltz to check out the town. It was a cute little town, with lots of college kids (there is a SUNY campus). No Rhett. I was starting to worry that maybe he was at home, playing with his kids.
We ate dinner at the Locust Tree restaurant. Thank god, there were no locusts in the food, at least not that I know of. Some of my co-workers enjoy a nice crispy locust sauteed with garlic and butter every seven years or so, but I usually pass on bug dishes. Jennifer at the B&B recommended this restaurant, and we were not disappointed. (Ok, maybe Larry was a little disappointed that the ricotta gnocchi in truffle butter was not as fluffy as the gnocchi he makes. Note to Larry–do not order food in restaurants that you can cook well. You are only setting yourself up for disappointment.) I had sardines–yikes! Heads and all! The dessert was sooooo delicious–a timbale of summer berries and limes served with raspberry sorbet. I forgot to take a picture. Oh, and Rhett did NOT show up at the restaurant. What could he be doing? (He probably stayed home and avoided the torrential downpours. It was raining frogs. Hundreds of Grumpopes.)
That pretty much sums up our day. Oh, P.S., who knew that my dad, I mean, ahem, Robert De Niro, lives in Gardiner? Maybe he and Rhett are friends. In any case, we didn’t see either of them, but we had a great day nonetheless, and in spite of the rain.
I’ll post more about our second day in a bit…now it’s time for dinner!

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
a miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily,
joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
clinical, intellectual, cynical.
There are times when all the world’s asleep,
the questions run too deep
for such a simple man.
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
but please tell me who I am.
Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical,
liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re
acceptable, respecable, presentable, a vegtable!
At night, when all the world’s asleep,
