We got to spend time there for a friends wedding, unfortunately the hotel they were married in burned down last year. However, do not go canoeing on the lake - it looks very calm, but the wind can be unbelievable. I took a canoe out on my own one morning and got stuck on the far side - it was like rowing with a giant sail. I dumped it on the shore and walked back to get help. It took 2 large men to bring it back to shore (one lost his paddle trying to "save" me). ;-) You gotta go back - Lake Placid is beautiful.
